The Henry Ford Health System will mandate COVID-19 vaccinations for its employees, the hospital announced Tuesday.
A number of hospitals across the country have taken this step, but the Detroit-based health system is the first in Michigan to require its workforce to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Roughly 68% of Henry Ford’s 33,000 employees have gotten the vaccine so far.
“We acknowledge the magnitude of this decision and we did not make it lightly,” President and CEO Wright Lassiter III said in the press release.
The mandate takes effect on Sept. 10 and applies to “all team members, students, volunteers and contractors.”
There are 894,433 COVID-19 cases in Michigan and 19,744 people have died since March 2020.
