Kirsten Gillibrand

After announcing that she is running for president in 2020, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) mentioned Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

“Gretchen Whitmer just got elected to be governor of Michigan and she crushed it in the last election,” Gillibrand said.

The comment came after Colbert presented her with a campaign necessities gift basket, which included such items as a cob of corn for Iowa, a piece of granite for New Hampshire and a plane ticket to Michigan.

Gretchen Whitmer

Speculation has run rampant that Whitmer could be chosen as somebody’s running-mate in 2020, an idea that she seemingly put to rest in an interview with the Advance last year.

Gillibrand was a vocal supporter of Whitmer’s during both the primary and general elections, using her social media presence to fundraise for Whitmer and visiting Michigan to campaign with her in person.

Will Whitmer return the favor? We’ll have to wait and see. Whitmer told the Advance in December that she had not yet chosen a candidate to support in 2020.
