Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro encouraged voters to donate to the Michigan Democratic Party in an email Tuesday night.

“Having this support is helpful for us to have our national voices pointing to the work we are doing in Michigan,” said MDP spokesman Paul Kanan. “The people in our state need to know that our leaders understand how important Michigan is in the 2020 election.”

Kanan says that Castro is the first of the 2020 candidates to help fundraise, but a few more of the more than 20 candidates will announce their fundraising efforts in the upcoming weeks.

Castro has visited Michigan a number of times since announcing his candidacy. In June, he held a town hall in Flint and visited the Farmer’s Market. Castro also hosted a fundraising event in Detroit on July 29 and was part of the second round of the Democratic presidential debates in the city.
