U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) made waves during her first week in office when she told a progressive audience: “We’re gonna impeach the motherfucker!”
On Saturday, Tlaib renewed her call against President Donald Trump while speaking on a Netroots Nation panel in Philadelphia, along with several Democratic members of Congress, according to media outlets including ThinkProgress.
“We’re gonna impeach the MF’er, don’t worry. It’s up to you, it’s not up to us. We went from ‘Let’s not talk about it,’ to close to 80 members of Congress coming out and supporting it,” Tlaib reportedly said. “[Trump] dismisses the equal branch of the Constitution and he does it arrogantly. This is a country not a business. You need to act like a government is for the people.”
The first-term member of Congress and attorney has been a leader in the impeachment fight, sponsoring in March a resolution investigating Trump’s “impeachable actions.” Tlaib contends that Trump’s myriad business dealings are grounds for an investigation, not just his ties to Russia.
Democrats won control of the U.S. House in January. More than 80 members of the 235-member caucus now support holding impeachment hearings, according to CNN. That includes a majority of Michigan’s seven-member Democratic U.S. House delegation: Tlaib and U.S. Reps. Brenda Lawrence (D-Southfield), Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Twp.) and Dan Kildee (D-Flint).
U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, a former Republican from Cascade Township, also backs impeachment, helping lead to his recent exit from the GOP, which has stood in lock-step with Trump.
