Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation Tuesday that her office says “clarifies and streamlines the licensing process” for medical marijuana and hemp growers.
Whitmer signed Senate Bill 203, which defines an applicant for a medical marijuana or hemp business as someone with a stake of greater than 10 percent in a company. It also requires them to “undergo the standard vetting process” and streamlines the application process for applicants who have less than 10 percent stake in a company.
State Sen. Michael MacDonald (R-Macomb Twp.) sponsored the bill.
The state currently defines an applicant as someone who applies for a license to grow, process, transport or run a provisioning center or safety compliance facility, according to a House Fiscal Agency analysis of the bill.
The new act essentially corrects state law to be consistent with another law overseeing medical marijuana, Public Act 582 of 2018.
